Dissertation note: Dissertation (Ph.D) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) , 2018 Abstract: The main aims of this research is to study the historical development of Nang Talung in the state of Kedah and Perlis. Next, this research intends to analyses the performance elements involved, comprising of all the needs and the purpose for staging the performance. Thirdly, is to make a recommendation for method towards its preservation of these performance arts to the society. The method used in this research comprised of three methods, firstly through the library research for finding relevant reference materials to the title. Secondly, is through an interview with the prominent nai nang ( puppeteers), informants and any individual directly related with the arts, whether in the state of Kedah, Perlis or the nearby provinces for an added reference. The third method of the research and considered a significant one is through observation participant's method by the researcher in the Nang Talung's performance, since directly involved in the arts for nearly two decades ago. The finding of the research had found that the Nang Talung's performances found in the state of Kedah and Perlis were an influence from the south of Thailand due to their proximity and shared the same language, culture and religion. The purpose of staging the Nang Talung's performance is more to a ritualistic purpose, that is for the vow fulfillment ceremony rather than for an entertainment.
